Tree Planting Plan
Did you know that the Uriarra Village street trees are planted according to a landscape masterplan that was designed by a multi-award winning landscape architecture firm? As designed, the Village landscape was intended to have tree lined avenues that provide a dense
shade canopy in summer and a stunning show of colour in autumn. The trees were planted in pairs on either side of the roads with different streets each receiving a different variety of deciduous tree. The design mirrors the plantings found in the early Canberra suburbs (Images Below)
Recently the Village Management Committee has undertaken a tree survey against the original masterplan. This found that the central streets in the Village have maintained the majority of their plantings, but several years of drought (and poor planting practices) has seen many of the Oak trees on Jim Bradley Crescent lost. The Committee has undertaken a plan to reinstate the lost trees where this remains practicable. This will be approached in stages and will take several years to complete.
The Committee has proposed several planting locations throughout the village for the first phase of remediation (approximately one dozen trees will be replanted). These are identified with blue dots in the image above. The locations have been selected to maximise tree cover across the entire village and share the benefits for all residents. According to an old Chinese proverb: The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now. The replanting of the village trees represents an investment for the Community in the long term appeal of the Village and amenity of the community. AGM Coming Up
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is coming up in Early November! If you would like to be on the Uriarra Village Management Committee then you need to come to the AGM, there will be a review of the Committee's decisions over the past year and a sign up sheet for the Committee.
Christmas Party
Planning for the Annual Christmas Party is underway, due to COVID-19 steps are being taken to ensure the event will be COVID Safe. An at-home alternative is also being considered for if there is another spike in COVID-19 cases.
Rainfall
So far we have received 144mm this August, which is nearly four times our monthly average. This rainfall has resulted in full dams and waterways around the ACT, a welcome site after the last two years of drought. There is also now an active La Nina, which normally results in a wetter than average period during its season.
Injured Animals
Any injured animals seen in the village areas, should be reported to the ACT RSPCA on (02) 6287 8100
River Flooding
After our recent rain the rivers around Canberra have been flowing strongly and even flooding, this was the case for the Murrumbidgee at Uriarra Crossing, which ended up flooding over the bridge. Here are some photos from the 9th of August;
